"Cute." Flydra said in response to Static's quip. He was a capable fighter but had a non-threatening sense of humor. She would allow him to continue his quirky antics as long as they didn't get in the way of the rest of the group. Although they were on a serious mission, sometimes it helped not to frame things so dramatically. Maybe jokes were how he coped with pressure.

"We'll try this door next." She stopped them and tried opening it. Ugh, another locked door. Why didn't they have some kind of master key to open these stupid things by now? Surely it couldn't be that hard for the military scientists to figure out. She stepped aside and motioned for Engrav to take a look at it. He seemed to enjoy playing walking encyclopedia.

Engrav examines the door!

Another door with glowing sigils. Engrav took a moment to inspect it, but he was already pretty sure what he was going to find. An inspection proved him correct. There was another closed-circuit trap along the edges of the door, which he pointed out to Flydra, being careful not to interact with it directly. "There, see? It's a full-bridge rectifier gate. So you have to cut it when charge cycles closed and falls back into the alternater. Then it shouldn't be able to cycle and the charge just flows into the grounding cable. Easy."

What Engrav was saying made sense when he explained it that way but unfortunately, Flydra's knowledge was centered around medicine and prosthetics rather than architecture or structural engineering. It was hard for her to have time to research all of the different scientific fields she wanted to and she'd had to focus less on others to make more time to delve deeper into biology. She crossed her arms and looked at the yellowblood.

"Impressive. Let's see you put it into practice." If what he was saying was true, she'd give him a chance to show her. Otherwise, she was willing to just let Scorpa destroy the entire door and they'd all just deal with the consequences. Some injuries and consequences were unavoidable. She'd learned to accept that at a young age.

Engrav tries to disarm the trap!

"Um..." Engrav replied, a little taken aback. She was relying on him to show her how to do this? He was a little confused. That didn't fit with most of his interactions with highbloods. Most of them seemed like they'd rather stick burning pokers in their eyes than admit they didn't know about something, let alone knew less than a lowblood. That was... novel. Engrav flushed just a little bit, and turning to the door so Flydra couldn't see his face. Dammit.

"You just have to, uh..." He continued, pausing for just a second to let the silence take effect. "Listen to the hum. Hear that? That means the alternator is beginning to spool up, and you have to cut it before it discharges." The yellowblood tapped a wire, pulling out his wirecutters. "That one's the second relay here, so if I snip it while the alternator is charging, it should break the circuit as long as it's grounded." He wound a spool of his own wire around the target, then attached it to the doorframe with a piece of electrician's putty. Not a great job grounding that, but it would more than do for this. A single snip, and the entire apperatus powered down. No fuss, no muss. He handed Flydra the wirecutters with a grin.

"For next time. Just gotta pay attention to the way the circuit's constructed."

Scorpa busts down the door with strength

"I'll handle the rest!" Scorpa declared, turning her body and ramming the door! She busted it down and landed on top of it with a victory pose! The yellowblood had gotten tired of standing around while the others fiddled with disarming the traps and was ready and raring for some action! Her wish would be granted as something else lurked in the room, waiting for them. At the sound of movement, she pulled her blade and turned to brace herself.

This is a mini-boss battle, the full rules and mechanics of which can be reviewed here.
The room beyond the door seems empty from the hallway, but stepping inside you are swiftly aware that you are not alone! For lurking in the corner is a dark groaning shape. As it turns towards you, you realize you are entering strife!
You have encountered a ...

Dice 1
1. ... Horrific... (-2 on all attacks)
2. ... Agile... (-1 on accuracy rolls)
3. ... Contorting... (-2 on all accuracy rolls)
4. ... Preserved ... (-1 on all attacks)
Dice 2
1. ... Toxic... (Players take 2 extra damage per turn)
2. ... Relentless... (Players take 2x damage on the lowest accuracy roll)
3. ... Empowered... (using artifacts/ability/items deals 3 dmg to the entire party)
4. ... Burning... (take an extra 3 dmg each time you deal max damage (highest roll possible for weapon or damage-dealing skill))
Dice 3
1. ...Wailing Zombie Prisoner!
2. ... Mutated Elite Troops!
3. ... Undead Cyborg!
4. ... Pack of Shambling Lusii!
MINIBOSS STARTING HP: 30/30
If you rolled a 1, take 5 dmg.
If you rolled a 2, take 5 dmg.
If you rolled a 3, take 4 dmg.
If you rolled a 4, take 4 dmg.
If you rolled a 5, take 3 dmg.
If you rolled a 6, take 3 dmg. Your attack this turn does double damage.
If all party members reach 0hp, look below:
You must make a tactical retreat! Scrambling back out of the room,
you barely make it to the pod with all your limbs attached.
Better luck next time! You have retreated from your mission and returned back to the docking area! Squad commanders, be sure to report in!

If the mini-boss reaches 0hp, look below:

If this is your first or second mini-boss fight look below:

If a member of your team is a trained Discipline or Endurace specialist OR registered as in-training for either:

You can close your eyes and draw on inner reserves to keep going. This can only be done once per ship exploration per troll trained.
If you are a Journeytroll or higher in your skill: Restore 1d10+3 OR 1/3rd (rounded down) of your hp.
If you are a Novice in your skill: Restore 1d8+2 OR 1/4th (rounded down) of your hp.
If you are training your skill: Restore 1d6+1 hp.
You cannot roll the dice then choose the flat restoration, one must be picked beforehand.

If a member of your team is a trained Troll Relations or Leadership specialist OR registered as in-training for either:

You can manage to cheer, rally, or cajole your teammates into finding more energy. This can only be done once per ship exploration per troll trained.
If you are a Journeytroll or higher in your skill: Each team member restores 1d6+3 (rolled separately) hp.
If you are a Novice in your skill: Each team member restores 1d6+2 (rolled separately) hp.
If you are training your skill: Each team member restores 1d4+1 (rolled separately) hp.

If this is your third mini-boss fight, you've reached one of the propulsion systems! Roll 1d4 and look in the spoiler below:

1 - It's a mess of disturbingly fleshy wires down here, but they all seem to be connected to a single, monolithic console. Everything is where it should be according to ground control's instructions, so recalibrating the power output is simple enough.
2 - It smells like ash and rot in here. Some of the wires are torn, sparking ominously in the vicinity of a particularly charred corpse. The unit is just draining power like this. With ground control's assistance, you manage to shut down the system and quarantine it.
3 - The room is pitch black. You're only able to discern its purpose through narrow flashlight beams and stumbling over the snaking wires. The console at the center is nothing but a dead-end for the ship's power supply. With instructions from headquarters, you manage to grope around in the dark and quarantine the system.
4 - The room feels like an inferno with how strained the propulsion system is. With instructions from headquarters you're able to alleviate pressure from the unit and reroute power accordingly. The center console already begins to glow less menacingly.
Congratulations! You have completed your mission and returned back to the docking area! Squad commanders, be sure to report in!

Static had watched Engrav disable the trap, trying to fallow his work. He had been practicing the art of disarming traps and unlocking as well, but, well, Engrav had just done it so... effortlessly! Static had to blink a few times before he came back to the present to attack the boss. "Yikes!" He yelled in surprise.

It was probably the panic that did it, that brought out his electricity. He had been using it a lot, but at the same time, he was pretty sure he was getting used to it more. It drained him less, it came back quicker. "You better watch out..." Static heard himself say as the current came up and into the quarterstaff. "Cuz im COMING FOR YA!"

Engrav attacks the Boss!

Engrav flinched back as electricity began to crackle all around the blueblood, shocked by the ferocity of his attack. Bits and pieces of undead lusii went flying all over the room as Static attacked furiously with his quarterstaff. Engrav felt something wet and flashy slap his face, and he scraped it into a small vial quickly, while he was sure attention was elsewhere.

His glasses beeped at him as he capped the glass, and he threw himself to the side just in time to avoid a brutal attack. It whistled right by his head as the yellowblood just barely managed to duck beneath the flailing... tentacle? He wasn't even sure what he was looking at.

Static's light show was pretty dazzling to watch. Flydra paused mid combat to admire the way the electricity crackled across the blueblood's weapon to surround the monster. He had impressive control over it. It would be worth studying later if she could convince him to come by the lab. If he was interested in Scorpa, maybe she could use that angle.

Speaking of her moirail, the yellowblood was looking more worn out that Flydra would have liked. It was time to give her super soldier a little juice. Pulling a special syringe out of her med kit, the tealblood ran and pushed some of the lusii aside to reach her friend. It was too important of a drug to throw at Scorpa. She needed to make sure it went in cleanly and did not miss. Injecting her partner with some powerful painkillers, she jumped back to avoid another attack from the enemies and called out to Scorpa.

"You're good to go, Scor!"

"What the ********! You sparkle now?!" Scorpa shouted, finally noticed Static's electric glow. Her eyes widened as he zipped around with the fury of a storm. Amazed, she stood dumbfounded for a moment, just watching him. It was incredible! She'd seen powered trolls before, their fellow Siren Austri mostly, but Scorpa remembered Sarce's invisibility as well. She had never seen someone shoot sparks out of their body before, however. It was beautiful.

And then it was a threat. A challenge. Scorpa had spent her life battling with Austri to prove she was just as strong and capable even without powers. It appeared she'd be doing the same against Static too. Fine! She rolled up her sleeves and leaped back into the fray.

"Don't give up!" The yellowblood shouted, mostly to herself. She jumped into the air and brought her blade down on the remaining lusus's head, killing it instantly. Landing carefully beside it, she smirked at her hand. Yes, she wouldn't allow any gaps to start now.

"That was good work back there. Now, let's patch up." Flydra nodded approvingly to her companions. She pulled several bandages and needles from her med kit and got to work cleaning up the worst of the wounds. They wouldn't have time for her to care for every injury but she would help with the ones that were definitely going to worsen into major problems. There was still a lot of ship left to go and she wanted to be sure every member of her squad survived this. After all, she was a doctor. Saving lives was her livelihood.

"That will do for now. Please visit me after the mission and I will provide more in depth care."

"Thank you Flyyy~" Scorpa sang cheerfully, holding out her arm to let the tealblood give her an injection. She was used to these by now. Needles were just a simple tool to the yellowblood, like a toothbrush. Letting out a breath as she took the steroids, the yellowblood let Flydra pull back and then wound her arm around a few times. There! She was back and energized, ready to go kick some more butt! It appeared the rest of her team was too! They were going to see this mission through! She turned to follow Static, pleased to see he was raring to go too!

Engrav rests and activates his healing artifact on Static!

The rest wasn't particularly needed for Engrav, as he'd managed to avoid most of the worst of the lusii's attacks. Still, it looked like the rest of the group was having a lot of trouble. That room had been very, very deadly, and he was glad they'd all come through it. He crouched down next to Static, who looked like he'd gotten the worst of it.

"Hey, let me help here. You look like you could use a little pick-me-up." He pulled out his pneumatic syringe from his vest. "Promise this won't hurt a bit." He injected the healing cocktail into Static's shoulder, who immediately looked like he was feeling better.
