Tevini attempted to wipe off what poisons remained on her once they were out of the room. She listened vaguely to what the others were saying but didn't respond, still feeling a big queasy from the battle that had just transpired. Cerpin and Etsali were doing their best to get back into the swing of things which she appreciated. Swallowing down her nerves, the redblood took the chance to load her gun with a new clip, figuring she'd better do so while things were quiet. Following the others, she tried her best to become focused and alert once more.

"It's pretty incredible though, isn't it?" Cerpin linked his arms behind his head as the group walked through the halls again. "It's all crappy now but it's crazy to think this giant junkyard used to fly through the galaxy. It's been places we can't even imagine." Even when he was feeling low, the idea of exploring what could be out there in the vastness of the universe always boosted his mood. The purpleblood put on a cocky mature attitude but when boiled down, he was a child chasing after the stars underneath it all. He shot a glance at Tevini.

"Maybe in our lifetime, we'll see off planet colonies again. Ha, what would they even look like?" He wished he were there already. His ambition was burning.

Probably a lot like home, once trolls were done conquering. Etsali cast a considering look at Cerpin and Tevini and wisely didn't say as much out loud, giving an agreeable hum instead. There was enough to hoard on Alternia for her for now, but some trolls wanted treasures they couldn't quite touch. She wouldn't take that from them.

She would, however, take the bits of this trap off this door. She glanced over the lock, made sure this time, and motioned for Tevini to take another crack at it.

This lock looked a lot more manageable! Tevini nodded to Etsali and got to work on it right away, wanting to redeem herself. She'd noted how Sascha had practically fallen to the ground laughing last time. The redblood knew she had to prove herself to him tonight or he'd forever think her too weak and incapable to helmsman. Cerpin too, with his new concern over her powers.

"We're in." Tevini announced, stepping back once she'd finished the job. She felt a small bit of relief that she'd managed it and proud that it hadn't taken her too long. The sound of something moving inside caught her attention and reminded her they weren't all clear yet. Bracing herself, she entered the room with her team.

The room beyond the door seems empty from the hallway, but stepping inside you are swiftly aware that you are not alone! For lurking in the corner is a dark groaning shape. As it turns towards you, you realize you are entering strife!

If this is your third mini-boss fight, you've reached one of the propulsion systems! Roll 1d4 and look in the spoiler below:

1 - It's a mess of disturbingly fleshy wires down here, but they all seem to be connected to a single, monolithic console. Everything is where it should be according to ground control's instructions, so recalibrating the power output is simple enough.
2 - It smells like ash and rot in here. Some of the wires are torn, sparking ominously in the vicinity of a particularly charred corpse. The unit is just draining power like this. With ground control's assistance, you manage to shut down the system and quarantine it.
3 - The room is pitch black. You're only able to discern its purpose through narrow flashlight beams and stumbling over the snaking wires. The console at the center is nothing but a dead-end for the ship's power supply. With instructions from headquarters, you manage to grope around in the dark and quarantine the system.
4 - The room feels like an inferno with how strained the propulsion system is. With instructions from headquarters you're able to alleviate pressure from the unit and reroute power accordingly. The center console already begins to glow less menacingly.
Congratulations! You have completed your mission and returned back to the docking area! Squad commanders, be sure to report in!

Etsali watched another moment to make sure Tevini had the right of things with the lock, then nodded her approval and moved to take a look inside the room. It was the usual deal, not a control room like she'd gotten into the habit of searching for, or another morgue she was making a habit now of never encountering again if she could help it. It wasn't until she turned her head back towards the others, about to say they ought to just move on, when she saw them.

They hadn't been thorough enough in putting down the lusii from the last room. Paling, the thief watched them drag themselves down the corridor towards the group, contorting over the limbs and wounds they'd been left with. Her mouth dropped open but nothing came out. Swallowing down the warning that seemed to have gotten stuck, she pushed Cerpin to the side, grabbed a kunai, and dashed past Sascha to throw herself in the way at least.

Etsali's reward for being a hero, as it turned out, was getting smacked into a wall and nearly crushed underfoot. Paw? Hoof? It was hard to keep up with what these things were sometimes while she was ducking and dodging for her life. Reaching frantically for her grappling gun again, and swearing she was going to get back to using it properly after this, she rolled onto her back and fired up at the creature looming closest.

It knocked it back long enough for her to scramble away, and she took the opening.

It was too fast for Cerpin to keep up with. Etsali moved like a blur and shoved him to the side to take the hits for the rest of them. He watching in terror as she disappeared under a stampede of beasts and he could no longer track her movements. The rest of the lusus had caught up to attack the other trolls. They weren't any prettier this time either. Tevini's toxins had warped and eaten away at parts of them. Cerpin felt sick to his stomach at the sight and stench.

"Don't be a hero, just be alive!" He shouted as a warning towards Tevini, or maybe Sascha, in case they tried to show off again. Her newfound rebellious streak was both interesting and annoying. He just wanted her to be safe. Launching forward, he aimed an arching slash at a serpentine lusus and hacked it in half just as it bit through his jumpsuit. Grunting in pain, he staggered back and clutched his thigh. His left leg was going through the ringer this week it seemed.

His leg felt like it was on fire from whatever venom was surging through him. Forehead and eyes scrunched up in pain, Cerpin allowed himself three seconds of self pity before forcing himself into action again. Opening his eyes, he was relieved to see Etsali free from the rampage and running loose again. Somehow she seemed able to get herself out of trouble just as quick as she landed herself in it.

By now the lusii were between him and Tevini which was not ideal. She'd been able to take out daywalkers with ease but these creatures moved oddly, contorting and twitching instead of moving in predictable patterns. Would she be able to hit them?

"Vee, over here!" He called out, swinging the flat of his blade to crush the lusii against the wall. Cutting them down hadn't worked in the morgue. They needed to destroy the brains. Holding a chunk of them there, he strained against their struggling and waited for her to line up the shot.

"I- okay!" Tevini nodded as Cerpin called to her. She’d been scared stiff at Etsali’s fall, barely snapped out of it by the voice of her partner shouting. Raising her gun, the redblood opened fire, shooting rapidly. The lusii lurched spastically and made it hard to aim in a predictable manner. Cerpin was doing his best to restrict their movement for her but she could see her shots weren’t penetrating enough to kill them.

”Just a little longer!” Tevini shouted as she moved to dodge the few remaining lusii that were free. As she fled, the mechanic undid the clip on her gun. She pulled out a different colored one, something she’d been experimenting with in her workshop. It was far from perfected but desperate times called for desperate measures. With a click, she switched the setting on her gun.

Tevini opened fire once more. Her shots flew around the room, raining on Cerpin’s trapped lusii. Little flashes of silver zipped past him, embedding in the heads. The seemed to be at randomly points and angles, not centered nicely in foreheads. They didn’t need to be for what she had planned.

They weren’t nails but screws.

"Nghh!" Tevini grit her teeth and forced out her psionic energy once more. It was sooner than she normally gave her recharge period and so she felt the strain. Wringing out everything in her, the redblood focused her power on the screws and began to twist them, drilling into bone.

”HAHHH!” She could feel she only had a phew seconds and so she bursted the flow of energy. The screws shot in, drilling into what remained of the brains and twisted, spinning chaotically in an effort to just destroy as much as possible. As Tevini lobotomized their opponents, she let out a scream and fell to the ground gasping. Catching herself barely in time so she wouldn’t slam her head on the floor, her vision blurred and she felt nauseated and weak. Her head hurt, with her ears ringing.

Vaguely, her face felt wet and she saw a red blur form on the floor beneath her.

Sascha attacks the contorting, relentless pack of shambling lusii!

0/1 Defense Style B: Nullify damage from the last attack.
Telekinesis: 1/2 Offensive Style B: Attack does double damage, and detracts 1 health from opponent every remaining turn. Recurring damage effect stacks.

Sascha had ended up at the back of the party as their threat approached them from behind. "What the... ********> He shouted as the lusii came into view between his comrades.

Etsali had already shot around and through the horde. The lusii were sandwiched between the trolls, their attention split two directions in the hall.

Cerpin did what he could to immobilize the lusii still headed their direction. Tevini raised her nail gun and Sascha cleared the area between her and her targets. The projectiles sunk into the lusii's skulls, then with a recognizable sparkle, blood showered from the entry wounds. The whirring on metal on bone was faint relative to the commotion, but horrifying all the same. "Holy s**t..." The spectacle nearly made Sascha miss the remaining lusus that dragged itself to his feet. With a start and a sneer, he crushed its cracked skull with his boot.

"Hold up! Hold up. Look at me," Sascha said, marching over to the crumpled Tevini. With an unintended harshness, he grabbed her by the shoulder, rolling her head so he could look her in the face. His eyes narrowed. He hadn't see what this looked like from the other side before. At least, not outside of textbook images. Sascha said nothing, but scrutinized Tevini's head for other sources of bleeding. The level of force and dexterity used to essentially grab bullets and spin them through bone was far beyond novice-level psionics. Sascha never would have guessed a self-taught psychic would have power reserves like that. Based on Tevini's current state, he would hazard he wasn't far off.

Etsali pulled herself back up to her feet, and it was about as hard a task as it ever had been. She wasn't entirely clear on what had just happened, though she assumed one of the two with mind powers over there were responsible. Which meant they were doing alright and her attempts to take pressure off them had worked out, right? She leaned her head back against the wall and breathed in nice and slow and steady, grounded herself.

Then she pulled on a smile and worked her way through the corpses back to the other side.

Etsali scouts!

That smile dropped right off of her face almost immediately. Etsali jumped over the last corpse in her path rather than go around, stumbling to a halt by Sascha and Tevini and grimacing as her boot settled in red. Her hands went up, hesitated in aborted reaches to pull Sascha away or get a look at Tevini's face herself, before dropping back to her sides. Sascha seemed to know what he was looking for.

"What is it? Is she alright?" She looked back to Tevini. "Are you alright? One of em get a hit in? Or five?" Then she was patting at her bag, searching. "Who had that medkit?"

Everything whirled around her as she tried to get her bearings back. The ringing in her ears dulled into a steady hum and everything was underwater. Then a pair of hands shook her and she crumbled, unprepared for it. Blinking, her vision cleared and it was not Cerpin’s eyes before her.

When had Sascha’s face gotten so close?

Startled, she flushed at the proximity. Her brain seemed to scramble more and while logic knocked to be let in, she was too flustered to entertain it yet.

“Stop! I’m fine!” Tevini pulled back, remembering Cerpin was there watching. Cerpin who... she swallowed it down, willing the thoughts away. She couldn’t fall down that hole right now. Quickly she needed to distract the others from her outburst, as well as herself.

“We should keep moving before they reanimate again.” Tevini declared, staggering out the door first to hide her face if only for a few seconds.
