"Nucleo, are you okay-" Amonee tried to call out to his friend but the lusii swarmed around him and he had to shift focus. He could hear his friends struggling against the creatures and wondered if this was how it would end. He remembered Vrykol in this moment and wished that he'd had the foresight to visit her a final time before this. If he could have begged and pleaded somehow to get a mixture of her potion, maybe it could have been used to ensure Nucleo and Eilidh would survive this battle even if they would change.

Out of the side of his vision, he saw Xavier fighting hard and taking heavy hits in return. His biscuit froze at the sight of blood and bruises all over him and he wanted to pull the other boy into his arms, far away from here and safe in confines of that forest hive where no one could touch them. He smashed through some more lusii to try and force his way to the jadeblood.

Xavier was supposed to keep them safe...he had trained to use his own weapon. Here he was barely able to do a damn thing against these things. His pumpbiscuit sunk as he went to again strike the beast, only to get knocked away like a rag doll.

Being knocked away like he was nothing, Xavier tumbled against the ground like a limp noodle. He laid there for a long moment as his body fought with him on continuing to fight on. He had been useless this entire fight..none of his attacks had done anything.

NO! He couldn't just lie here like this!

Xavier had trolls to protect! This was his family! What in the Mothergrubs name was he doing just staying here like this?! His eyes snapped open as he pushed himself up, hopping back up onto his feet. While worse for the ware and bleeding, he would not simply lie there unconscious. Memories of Eilidh and Amonee surged to the forefront of his thinkpan. Coupled with visions of the four of them on late nights spent talking and the jadeblood found the resolve to fight on.

Using his glaive to support himself, he tried to ready to help bring this damn beast down before it hurt them any further!

"Okay." Newcleo nodded solemnly. He was the weakest of the clones, the most uncomfortable with fighting. Honestly, he was scared.

But he shared Nucleo's feelings. He shared Nucleo's fears. He was a part of Nucleo. He wasn't going to be the part that ran away and let him down.

"Survive." He muttered. Then as the lusii began another charge, the clone leaped forward into the way.

He wasn't good at fighting. But all clones were still good for one thing.

Dying.

Nucleo felt ill.

"N-no." The greenblood stared blankly forward. Newcleo's sacrifice shook him to his core. How many clones did he have to watch die? Why did he keep summoning them when he knew... ? Nucleo clutched his mouth, tears falling.

Why did he keep dooming them?

He stayed down on the floor unable to stand on his own, sobbing. It wasn't fair. It wasn't fair that there was nothing he could do for them. Why had he been born this way?

He was cursed. Surrounded by love... unable to remember it.

Unable to protect it.

Eilidh saw Xavier fall, moving to protect them. She was beginning to panic. No! This wasn't good! Nucleo was next. Eilidh's eyes filled with tears, moving to defend her pink and red loves. She glanced to Amonee, "Cover me!" She pleaded, moving to try to revive her friends. She then turned to the creature, rage building in her sweet heart... NO. ONE. ********. WITH. HER. EIlidh hit the ground hard. This was it... it was painful. Her body hurt so much but she had to keep fighting. The tealblood forced herself up, holding her side. She saw Nucleo still on the ground and the boss dead. "N-no.... Nucleo!" She moved as fast as her battered body could to him, sitting beside him. Her eyes filled with tears, touching his face. She failed him... she failed everyone. What good was the power to heal if you couldn't even protect the ones you love when they need you most. "I-I'm sorry... " she mumbles, bringing him close to her body to hold him close. "I wont leave you..." She promised, looking to her friends. "I don't think we should continue on.... He's really hurt.... we all are." She explained, "Please, we should go back!"

Amonee is healing through the bandaid
4/16 advances
1/3 minibosses defeated

It happened in slow motion. Nucleo crumpled to the floor and did not rise. Eilidh clutched the body to her own, begging to turn back. Xavier stood quietly in an expression of shock and disbelief. This was too much for them. A look out the window reminded Amonee though, if they didn't do this there might not be a home to return to. The flagship would crush all the mountains and forests they could possibly hide in. It would take everything.

They had to keep going. They had promised Panili to do everything they could to protect Alternia.

"It's scary and it's painful. But I'm not going to give up fighting for you guys." He brushed some of his hair back into place. It had come undone in the struggle. "I won't let this ship destroy our place. Our home." He took the bandaid from Eilidh and clasped her hand in his before tugging her into a tight embrace. She was trying her hardest to pull herself together and hold onto a shred of hope.

He stuck the bandaid on his skin but it was the look in her eyes that rekindled the fire inside him.

"Nucleo, can you stand?" He bit his lip, afraid of the answer. Letting go of the tealblood, he crouched down to help the greenblood back to his feet. They couldn't turn back but they were absolutely not going to leave him here.

Making sure everyone was safe, Eilidh continued on with her friends. She wasn't happy about it but they did have a mission to complete. They could do this together..... The tealblood stopped, pointing to the door she saw, "Another door.... are we ready for this?" She asked as she looked at her friends.

Amonee is checking out the door, he breaks it down (-5 HP)
5/16 advances
1/3 minibosses defeated

"Ha... ready." Amonee took in a deep breath and let it out at the sight of another impassable door. Did this mean they were getting closer or further away from their goal? He pushed those thoughts out of his mind. They had to stay positive. His friends were still here with him even if they were worn down and hurt. It was going to be okay as long as they stuck together.

He looked for a weak spot in the door and kicked at it to break it open. It took more force and more attempts than he would have liked but they were finally through. Phew, that was a lot more work than he'd expected. He followed behind the others weakly as they passed inside.

Xavier moved in to inspect the room to see what sort of trap they were dealing with. Given Amonee had so graciously bashed yet another door down, he inspected the room. He could see it seemed to be some kind of false ceiling. Oh, dear..this wasn't good, no not at all. Whoever went in first it seemed would trigger the system. Not wanting any of his friends to be hurt by means of a falling ceiling the jadeblood began to advance.

He would take the brunt of the force.

Boy did he ever take the brunt of the blow. Upon entering the room, the ceiling dropped down as expected. "Watch out!!" He called back to them, not telling them exactly what would happen. He could never live with himself if the already injured Nucleo or his moirail and matesprit were hurt..so he willingly took the knock to the skull. He was lucky his horns didn't crack from the force of the blow.

Seeing stars he held his thinkpan in one gloved hand as he closed his eyes trying to keep himself focused.

This is a mini-boss battle, the full rules and mechanics of which can be reviewed here.
The room beyond the door seems empty from the hallway, but stepping inside you are swiftly aware that you are not alone! For lurking in the corner is a dark groaning shape. As it turns towards you, you realize you are entering strife!
You have encountered a ...

Dice 1
1. ... Horrific... (-2 on all attacks)
2. ... Agile... (-1 on accuracy rolls)
3. ... Contorting... (-2 on all accuracy rolls)
4. ... Preserved ... (-1 on all attacks)
Dice 2
1. ... Toxic... (Players take 2 extra damage per turn)
2. ... Relentless... (Players take 2x damage on the lowest accuracy roll)
3. ... Empowered... (using artifacts/ability/items deals 3 dmg to the entire party)
4. ... Burning... (take an extra 3 dmg each time you deal max damage (highest roll possible for weapon or damage-dealing skill))
Dice 3
1. ...Wailing Zombie Prisoner!
2. ... Mutated Elite Troops!
3. ... Undead Cyborg!
4. ... Pack of Shambling Lusii!
MINIBOSS STARTING HP: 30/30
If you rolled a 1, take 5 dmg.
If you rolled a 2, take 5 dmg.
If you rolled a 3, take 4 dmg.
If you rolled a 4, take 4 dmg.
If you rolled a 5, take 3 dmg.
If you rolled a 6, take 3 dmg. Your attack this turn does double damage.
If all party members reach 0hp, look below:
You must make a tactical retreat! Scrambling back out of the room,
you barely make it to the pod with all your limbs attached.
Better luck next time! You have retreated from your mission and returned back to the docking area! Squad commanders, be sure to report in!

If the mini-boss reaches 0hp, look below:

If this is your first or second mini-boss fight look below:

If a member of your team is a trained Discipline or Endurace specialist OR registered as in-training for either:

You can close your eyes and draw on inner reserves to keep going. This can only be done once per ship exploration per troll trained.
If you are a Journeytroll or higher in your skill: Restore 1d10+3 OR 1/3rd (rounded down) of your hp.
If you are a Novice in your skill: Restore 1d8+2 OR 1/4th (rounded down) of your hp.
If you are training your skill: Restore 1d6+1 hp.
You cannot roll the dice then choose the flat restoration, one must be picked beforehand.

If a member of your team is a trained Troll Relations or Leadership specialist OR registered as in-training for either:

You can manage to cheer, rally, or cajole your teammates into finding more energy. This can only be done once per ship exploration per troll trained.
If you are a Journeytroll or higher in your skill: Each team member restores 1d6+3 (rolled separately) hp.
If you are a Novice in your skill: Each team member restores 1d6+2 (rolled separately) hp.
If you are training your skill: Each team member restores 1d4+1 (rolled separately) hp.

If this is your third mini-boss fight, you've reached one of the propulsion systems! Roll 1d4 and look in the spoiler below:

1 - It's a mess of disturbingly fleshy wires down here, but they all seem to be connected to a single, monolithic console. Everything is where it should be according to ground control's instructions, so recalibrating the power output is simple enough.
2 - It smells like ash and rot in here. Some of the wires are torn, sparking ominously in the vicinity of a particularly charred corpse. The unit is just draining power like this. With ground control's assistance, you manage to shut down the system and quarantine it.
3 - The room is pitch black. You're only able to discern its purpose through narrow flashlight beams and stumbling over the snaking wires. The console at the center is nothing but a dead-end for the ship's power supply. With instructions from headquarters, you manage to grope around in the dark and quarantine the system.
4 - The room feels like an inferno with how strained the propulsion system is. With instructions from headquarters you're able to alleviate pressure from the unit and reroute power accordingly. The center console already begins to glow less menacingly.
Congratulations! You have completed your mission and returned back to the docking area! Squad commanders, be sure to report in!
