Freddy barely had any time to savour his victory. As he declared his capture to Kent and Hayes, he felt the grass brush up against him. Freddy turned his back, still holding onto Abra's Pokeball. Behind him another Abra had appeared. This time standing up. It had appeared so quickly, Freddy was unsure if it was a new Abra or if the one he had just captured had escaped. He returned Owliver back to its Pokeball and pulled out another. "Cecil, let's go!" he yelled, throwing his Pokeball into the air, releasing his Girafarig Cecil into the battle. "Cha-riiigggg~" it cried, rearing back on its hind legs and landing with a soft thud on the grass. Freddy started with an Assurance Attack, Cecil swinging backwards and hitting the Abra with his sentient tail. The Abra fell back into the grass defeated, leaving Freddy to confirm that it wasn't the Abra he had caught prior.

Kent wandered into the tall grass that he was positive at this point was in someone's backyard, looking for some sort of wild Pokemon encounter. Around the corner of the house he heard a faint whirring noise, and slowly creeped around the corner. There he saw a Magnemite siphoning electricity for the house's outside AC unit. Startled by his sudden appearance, the Magnemite floated aggressively towards them, discharging small charges of electricity.
"Seems like this little zap sapper wants to battle. Let's do this, bud!" Kent said as Pikachu leaped off his shoulder and into the grass in front of them.
Once Pikachu landed, its cheeks also started discharging electricity and within a second the entire ground was electrically charged with Pikachu's Electric Terrain. The Magnemite attacked Pikachu with a Thunder Shock, but it didn't seem to have any effect. In fact, it seemed like Pikachu felt even stronger after it. After a few Electro Balls, the Magnemite finally fell to the ground fainted.
"Good job, Flash! Let's get you healed up." Kent cheered before pulling out some Potions and healing his Pikachu.
It was around that time Kent heard Freddy celebrating about a catching an Abra. The photographer jogged out of the backyard and back into the street to meet up with his friends.

"Professor who?" Hayes asked Freddy after they'd all stepped outside, surprised to hear about a professor all of a sudden - and one who was apparently on the island by the sound of it. He shrugged at the mention of battling and training that followed however, as it wasn't something he was spectacular at... although that's not to say he hadn't given it a good attempt in the past. Fortunately, it didn't sound like Kent was an experienced trainer either - although he didn't know about Freddy.
A step behind the two of them who'd already headed over toward the tall grass on the other side of the street, Hayes stayed behind and removed one of the Pokeballs from where he kept them, rolling it around in his palm. "How about it, then?" He asked, looking at the ball. "You ready to have a look around?" Hayes smiled before he released Ditto, who appeared before him and... well, he wouldn't say it looked too impressed, but... that was usually how it looked. It was a little too bright (and hot) outside for him to let Goomy outside, knowing it didn't like this sort of heat, but he'd find a place in the shade for it to come out and have a look at the city alongside it's amorphous pal.

After he'd let it out of it's Pokeball, Ditto followed alongside him as he walked over to where the others had gone; the Pokemon managed on it's own surprisingly well, even when it wasn't transformed into something.
"Ooo~" It cooed as they went, looking around at it's new surroundings. Hayes had had it outside on the ferry ride over, along with Goomy, but it was different looking at the island from a distance compared to being on it. "Oh, so do you like it?" He asked, grinning at it after they'd stopped on the inside of one of the fences. "I thought you might, although I haven't seen many othe-" Hayes stopped mid-sentence, about to explain to it the lack of Pokemon so far when a distinctive rustling had put a hold on that. Ditto had heard it to and inched closer to the noise, ignoring Hayes as he crouched down to get a better look at whatever was in the grass, instead focusing on whatever was on the other side. All was silent for a moment before the local Pokemon walked out from the grass, stopping at the sight of a crouched Hayes and the expressionless blob.
"Ooogooos~" Ditto continued to coo, it's voice changing when it shifted into it's new appearance. The change startled the wild Pokemon, however, and it disappeared into the grass a second later - leaving a disappointed Ditto alone, it's expression easier to read in the Yungoos' shape. It changed back after it didn't look like the Pokemon would return and slid away from the grass and closer to Hayes, who gave it a consoling pat on what he'd always assumed was it's head. "Oh, it's alright, bud... it was only surprised..." Hayes murmured as consolingly as he could to the amorphous Pokemon, emphasizing with it's disappointment in what was it's first impression of the region and it's Pokemon.

When it didn't look like he was accomplishing much in his attempt to console it, he started looking around for a spot out of the sun and in the shade while he continued to run a hand along it's gelatinous head, smiling when he'd found one.
"Oh, this should be a good place..." He smiled as he unclipped another Pokeball from it's place and held it in front of Ditto's face, which seemed to get it's attention. "...how about we bring her out?" Hayes asked the Pokemon, who he assumed agreed given it's own smile. He released Goomy in the shade and then walked over towards it, the amorphous Pokemon following behind and looking pleased at the appearance of it's oddly shaped friend. The two Pokemon were thick as thieves, and were the first Pokemon he'd ever caught in their respective regions, so they'd known each other a while and he knew it'd be able to boost the transforming Pokemon's spirits.
And thankfully, he'd been right. It didn't take Ditto's mood long to improve now that he'd brought out Goomy, and in between interactions with Ditto it looked like it liked the place it'd found itself in. "Oh, I wonder... did you want to try any of these?" Hayes asked after watching the two Pokemon interact for a time, pulling out a couple of the beans he'd been handed back at the Pokemon Center. Goomy appeared interested and made it's way over, while Ditto simply looked like it wanted to follow it wherever it went. He smiled as it stopped in front of him and gave the dragon a rub behind it's horns with the hand he wasn't holding the beans with. "Gooo~" It purred in response.
"Sorry it took a while to let you out here, it's a bit..." Hayes started to explain to the dragon-type before handing it the beans, but a nearby noise distracted him mid-sentence and while he was looking over in the direction he'd heard it from, Ditto morphed into the dragon-type and took all the beans. He glanced back down then, but Ditto had already returned to it's original form and left an irritated looking Goomy in it's place.
He was about to ask what'd happened when he heard the noise again, only louder.
"What is that?"

It had seemed that his two friends were doing well, although they had not found their luck in the tall grass, but towards the more urban side of Hau'Oli. It seemed like Kent had found himself battling a Magnemite, whilst Hayes had encountered a plethora of Pokemon, from Yungoos to Grimer and also a Magnemite. Freddy wandered towards where the action was happening to see Hayes finishing his battles. That was when he felt the hair on his arms begin to stand up. There was a sudden noise behind a bin and Freddy spun around on the spot, Owliver's Pokeball in hand. From behind the bin emerged a Pichu! Freddy immediately put on his glasses and shuffled towards the Pichu. "I had heard we had a group of Pichu living in Hau'Oli. What a treat. There still isn't much written on what causes it's evolution Raichu to become a psychic type. I'll need one of these" Freddy said, releasing Owliver into battle.
"Pra-Praaa~" it called out, flapping it's small wings and landing on the ground. "Chaaaa~" Pichu cried, wagging it's tail at Owliver. He was taken aback. Freddy was not. "Owliver! Use Leafage!" Freddy said, Owliver flapped into the air and with a brush of his wings expelled a gust of leaves at the Pichu, knocking it back towards the bin. It retaliated with a Thundershock, the hair on Freddy's arms standing up once more. Despite being an owl, his flying type was nulled by his roots as a grass Pokemon, the damage was by no means good, but it was softened. Freddy threw out another Leafage attack followed by the throw of an Inspiration Ball as the Pichu fell. It was captured. He couldn't believe how his team was coming together.

Too interested in whatever he'd heard he stood up and left the fenced in area along with his two Pokemon, who followed behind him as he walked in the direction he'd heard all the noise.
"...told you it wouldn't work!" "Don't be a dork, it'll work! We'll get a couple other Grunts, and-"
As he rounded the side of a building, the gate left open and inviting, he noticed the odd looking Grimer and Magnemite - it looked like the amorphous Pokemon was only wandering around below, while the magnetic Pokemon was siphoning electricity from above somewhere, so he didn't know how they'd made all the noise he'd heard.
"-and, uh, does it look like it's coming closer...?" "Do something!" "You do something!"
"Oh, it's you two." Hayes said after he'd gotten a bit closer and noticed the two Skull Grunts from earlier, bickering about something while the Alolan Grimer came closer. "That's... a Grimer, right? Isn't it?" He asked, staring at the wild Pokemon while they backed away from it. It didn't look angry, but when he glanced back at the two grunts he noticed their unconscious Pokemon a second before they returned them to their Pokeballs. "It's mad, man!" The grunt with the blue hair shouted in a panic. "Don't bother, it's time to scram!" The pink haired one shouted at the other grunt, giving him a smack on the back of his head before taking off, the guy running after her a moment later. Hayes watched them go for a couple seconds, not sure if he should feel left behind or not, before turning back to look at the wild Pokemon. "It's got to be a Grimer..." He murmured, pulling out the Pokedex he'd brought from home and directing it at the approaching blob. It seemed to take a little longer than usual, but after a few extra seconds it started it's description.
"...A Grimer, which had been brought in to solve a problem with garbage, developed over time into this form..."
"Oh, so you're like... a... " Hayes started, but realized he didn't know what it was like as he'd never encountered anything like it before. He didn't have more time to think about it, though, as it looked like he'd caught the Magnemite's attention as well... maybe the Pokedex had caught its eye? No matter the reason, it looked like he'd have to battle the wild Pokemon now, and battle they did - a thrilling double battle ending with the wild Pokemon being caught by him. After it was all over and he'd returned Ditto and Goomy to their balls, Hayes headed back the way he'd came and hoped he hadn't gotten too far from away from where he'd last seen the others.

Kent was going to head back towards the street to meet up with his friends, he heard quite a bit of ruckus coming for their direction, but after his battle with the wild Magnemite he still felt like he was being watched. The photographer suddenly got tense, holding out his arm towards his partner who quickly climbed up and onto his shoulder. Kent's sharp golden eyes squinted behind his glasses as he scanned the area. He definitely felt the presence of something watching him, sizing him up. "Something's watching it. You feel it, right bud?" Kent murmured to his Pikachu.
The Pikachu nodded back, the fur on its back standing up. "Pi..."
Just as quickly as the feeling appeared, it vanished. Kent hopped the fence, a feat normally impossible in the Pokemon world, and ended up on the other side of the street. As soon as he entered street he reached down at his belt and threw out a Pokeball, releasing his Exeggutor.
"Stretch, I need a lift!" Kent said, holding his arm up.
Exeggutor craned its neck down and Kent wrapped an arm around it before quickly being lifted thirty feet into the air. The photographer quickly scanned the horizon, catching a strange white light and red blur for just an instant before it vanished.

Freddy waited, sat in the bushes watching Hayes double battle against a Magnemite and Grimer. Despite it still being made of sludge, the colouring of the Grimer found in Alola were so much more, aesthetically pleasing than their Johto variants. It was due to something in their diet that caused them to become almost psychedelic in their appearance. He watched as Hayes caught both the Grimer and the Magnemite, springing from the grass with his arms raised high. "You did it! Double Whammy! Good job Hayes!" Freddy yelled. "Looks like we've all got an electric Pokemon in our arsenal now. I just caught a Pichu over by the bins. How cool do those Grimer look though? Pretty different to the ones you get back home I expect?" as Freddy finished his sentence, he saw a large tower rise from the grass. It was an Alolan Exeggutor! Freddy squinted, pushing his glasses up back onto his nose. It looked like Kent hanging from the Exeggutor. "Speaking of different Pokemon back home. he cupped his hands around his mouth. "Kent! Alola there!"

Hayes didn't get far before Freddy reappeared and congratulated him on the battle, which he'd apparently witnessed. "O-oh!" He shouted, the sudden appearance catching him by surprise. "Freddy, geez, you...." Hayes almost started to tell him he'd have to stop jumping out like that, but the mention of the oddly colored Grimer and all their success with catching Pokemon derailed him.
"You caught a Pichu? Nice one, I bet it'll get along with Kent's Pikachu..." He mused, although he didn't have anything to back up the claim with. "And yeah! It's a completely different color, didn't expect that at all. I wanted to ask you about it, actually..." Hayes started to gush, excited to talk about it, but then heard the local call out to Kent. He turned around in the direction Freddy had been looking, and after a moment of bewilderment he saw him up in the air hanging from a... palm tree? Or was it an Exeggutor? "...and maybe ask you about that, too." Hayes chuckled, looking up at Kent hanging from it; that definitely wasn't what he'd expected.

Kent hung off the side of his Exeggutor about thirty feet up in the air, staring off to the north where he saw the strange red figure. That was the second time he'd seen that red blur since arriving in Alola, and he had a feeling it wouldn't be the last time either.
"Alola sure has an adventure in store for us, huh guys?" Kent said, asking his two Pokemon as he took in the scenery from his living vantage point.
He was pulled back into reality when he heard his friends calling out his name. He looked down and saw them the next street over. Kent used his other arm and patted Stretch and pointed towards Hayes and Freddy. Exeggutor leaned forward, fitting its neck between two buildings and dropped Kent off right in front of his two friends. Kent patted his Exeggutor on one of its head before returning it to its Pokeball. It was then he noticed the new Pokeballs on both his friends' belts.
"Hey fellas! What I miss?"

Freddy had adopted his usual stance of his hands on his hips as Kent's Exeggutor let him off on their side of the street. He let out an impressed whistle and a nod of approval. "It's been Pokemon central over here. I've picked myself up an Abra and a Pichu and Hayes has done pretty well himself. Caught one of our special Alolan Grimers. I was just about to tell Hayes here why it was such a special kind of Pokemon. See, we here in Alola have had quite the pollution problem, so we imported some Grimer to take care of it. But the rubbish problem was more solid than sludge, this in turn caused them to change their whole composition. It's this rubbish that gives them their colourful membrane. Speaking of Alolan variants. Your Exeggutor has quite the interesting story behind it too!" Freddy said with barely a breath. From his bag he produced a small notepad and pencil. On it he drew a picture of an Alolan Exeggutor. Long. Slim. Then next to it, he drew a shorter and rounder version. With a cough he began.
"See it's our climate that causes Exeggutor to grow to such heights. Growing closer to the sun, they get all the nutrients they need! It's funny that some people refer to this as the Alolan Variant when studies actually show this is how they should look compared to your native Kanto variety. What is interesting is the typing change. Our Alolan variety are a combination of grass and dragon, whilst the Kanto variety substitute the dragon for psychic. Why this is I don't know." he took a pause and pressed his finger to his lips, deep in thought. "I do have my own theory however and it pertains mainly to the phrase head in the clouds, referring to not being totally of sound mind. With the shorter variety, they are lower to the ground. Potentially this means they are smarter and are able to harness their own psychic abilities. he stopped, chewing on the end of his pencil as he began theorising in his head.
It was the sound of a wingull passing overhead that snapped him out from his thoughts. Stuffing his supplies back into his bag, he took off his glasses and placed them into his shirt's front pocket. "I don't know about you fellas, but my Pokemon and I could do with a drink. Care to head back to the Pokemon Centre for a spell?" Freddy said, beginning to stride to the Centre before he finished his sentence.

Hayes listened intently to Freddy's explanation of the Grimer's change, nodding along when he reaffirmed what the Pokedex had told him and then continuing on into the specifics. "So it was something like that, huh...?" He said, mostly to himself while he looked down at the Pokemon's ball, before returning his attention to Freddy as he prepared to talk about the Exeggutor that Kent had appeared on - another Pokemon he was interested in.
"Has anyone ever told you you're a regular encyclopedia, Freddy?" Hayes smiled and laughed after he'd finished his explanation on the Alolan Exeggutor, and even shared his own theory on them. While he didn't know how accurate the theory itself was, it sounded as plausible as anything else considering he hadn't known about them at all. After he'd finished the explanation and shared the theory, he mentioned wanting a drink at the Pokemon Center and walked off before he'd finished asking if they wanted to go. Hayes shrugged as he looked at Kent and watched their friend as he headed back in the direction they'd come from not all that long ago.
"I guess it's off to the Pokemon Center, then?" He asked rhetorically. "A drink sounds good, and I did already want to drop by before we headed out onto Route 2." Hayes said to Kent before he'd go and follow after Freddy, having all the more reason to need to go to the Pokemon Center because of the Pokemon he'd just encountered. "How'd you run into that Alolan Exeggutor, anyway? Did you climb it too?" He asked after they'd gotten underway, grinning a bit as he brought up how they'd first met on the beach, unaware that's actually how it happened.

Kent stood there with his eyebrows lifted as Freddy explained the regional differences between both Grimer and Exeggutor. Once Freddy was done, Kent let out his own impressed whistle.
"Huh, I had no idea there were regional variants of Pokemon. Never seen that before in the other regions I've been to. Alola's just full of surprises!" Kent remarked with a grin before Freddy suggested they head back to the Pokemon Center.
While they were following Freddy back towards the Pokemon Center Hayes looked over at Kent and asked how he had caught that Exeggutor in the first place, joking about climbing it. Kent let out a laugh and nodded.
"Pretty much actually. I was looking for a good vantage point for some photos of the beach, and one almost thirty foot fall and an Oran Berry and here we are." Kent explained with a smile as they entered the Pokemon Center.

Freddy spun around and began to walk backwards as his friends reacted to the minor lecture he had slapped together on two of the Alolan Variants they had encountered. "It's interesting what can cause these changes in Pokemon. We have quite a few more like it on the islands. Don't want to spoil it for you Kent, but I think you'll be encountering another one soon!" Freddy said, his arms placed behind his head. In reaction to Hayes calling him a Pokemon Encyclopedia, Freddy remarked "It's mainly conspiracies that interest me. Pokemon theories. I leave the descriptions to the Pokedex, but if there is something to be uncovered, I'm all over it. Like don't get me started on the theories behind Butterfree's evolutionary cycle. Can go on for days."
The Pokemon Centre wasn't far away. Freddy hadn't had the chance to visit it early due to the encounter with Team Skull, but now his Pokemon and himself both needed a brief moment of respite. He approached the counter to see Nurse Joy, whom took his Pokemon and began the healing process. With a sigh of relief, Freddy approached the coffee seller and lay his head on the counter, ordering a Komala Coffee. After the seller's usual small piece of triva concerning Freddy's purchase, he took a seat and sipped it slowly, waiting for Nurse Joy to finish healing his Pokemon.
