Our history, lest we forget...

PostPosted: Sat Mar 05, 2016 10:40 am
xxxOur fall from grace...

Gone now, it seems, are the lions who best remember this history, but it is a history best not forgotten.

Before Ram, and before his daughter, and before even the prior queen, Mlinda ya'uziwa, the king of the Bahari'mtoto was Chafuko. The large lion had been passed the title of king from his great-grandfather, his grandfather, his father, and to him.

As a cub, Chafuko had more knowledge about the sea than any other lion in the pride. This would be a trait carried down to the heir of the throne. Chafuko, however, had been taught the ways of the sea, such as it's emotions, thoughts, etc. by his grandfather.

Chafuko had grown over time, and met a lioness name Sulisuli. Together, they ruled over the pride, and successfully raised a son named Kwangu. Kwangu, in turn, was a successful king, and after Chafuko and Sulisuli passed away, this king was left alone.

There was a point in the history of the Bahari'mtoto when a revolution took place. Many lions believed Kwangu was a demon, and they attempted to overthrow the monarchy. If it hadn't been for a younger lioness named Mwenza'mawe, the Bahari'mtoto wouldn't have continued. Through the months and years that passed by, the two had barely been able to control the pride. Their love for the pride was as strong as their own.

Their daughter, Mlinda ya'uziwa was the next in line for the throne, as Mwenza and Kwangu had begun to age. As their daughter, she was to be blessed by the sea. However, as the coronation began, the winds had begun to howl, and the waves had grown enormous. The little cub was frightened, as were all the other pride members. As 2 enormous waves pounded onto the members, they were taken by the sea. A third wave came, and painfully ripped the king and queen from their daughter's sides. Mlinda herself had barely escaped from these waves, keeping her soggy, tiny body hidden among the slippery, jagged rocks that lay scattered along the shore. What had caused such a disaster to happen? Was it an omen from the sea, or perhaps a warning....?

xxxThe return to the sea...

Eventualy, Mlinda came back and re-established the Bahari'mtoto pride, with the help of her mate, Tambuzi. They had 5 children: Sikulu, Rengu, Miani, Siyasura, and Tamu. Joining them, too, was a compatriot of their cubhood, Leboya, who brought into the world her own four children.

The pride's numbers began to swell, as others soon joined - Some only drifted through, others remained and started families. The Bahari'mtoto, it seemed, were prospering, and as the cubs grew up, Sikulu seemed well on his way to becoming a good king for the pride.

Perhaps the first sign was Siyasura leaving, nobody's sure, but life wouldn't continue, it seemed, as it had before, for the Bahari had clearly not known what the warnings of before really meant.

xxxThe Wrath of the Gods...

The Bahari'mtoto Pride had lived in relative isolation for many years, untouched and untainted by the outside world. As pacifists they provoked no one and strove never to insult or offend. Guided by tradition and a respected ruler, with a worthy heir to eventually take the throne, their lives were peaceful and otherwise content. Alas, with a content life often comes complacency and when the pride grew forgetful of the blessings that the gods have graced them with, they were scorned.

...At least this is how the Bahari'mtoto regarded the tragedy that befell them.

On one of their finest mornings it struck, an almighty rumble deep within the ocean that caused the waters to rise. Towering over their heads menacingly, the mighty tsunami tore across the ocean and cast down upon the coastline with a mighty crash. It's destruction was unrivalled, tearing the land asunder and with it, the unsuspecting families that had been sleeping peacefully in their dens.

No one could have predicted that such an event would occur, but as the death toll rose it left a striking reminder of the trouble that complacency caused. Many were named as missing, some were killed and others severely injured... It was only with the assistance of passing rogues that the pride slowly but surely began to recover and rebuild, though their numbers were severely depleted and the once mighty pride, all but destroyed.

In the wake of the destruction the former king was pronounced dead, and it was at this point that a rogue lioness claiming distant relations to this royal line, that took the disputed title of leader.

She made many changes and not all of them were well received...

Nevertheless, her rule continued for quite some time until fate decided that her decision to ignore tradition was not appropriate. Thus, her father was 'sent' to locate her and in doing so, revealed himself to be the 'rightful' leader of the pride. There are rumours that he would have ignored this position if he had the opportunity, but when it became apparent that his daughter had acted dishonourably regarding certain aspects of this old and traditional pride, he recognised that it was his duty to restore the old ways.

Thus, the pridal leader 'Ram', a relative of the former queen, rose to the rank of King and set about rebuilding the pride in its former image...though with the slightest of rogue flares!

xxxA Blessing in Disguise...

Life within the Bahari'mtoto had always been one of peace, yet with the arrival of Ram there had been a number of changes that had left uncertainty in his wake - would he stay after he deemed his work 'done', was he even worthy of the post? He had never seemed terribly inclined towards them and seemed intent only on cleaning up the mess his daughter had made for the pride...Suffice it to say that the pride were uncertain about their own future.

It was for this reason that the gods must have deemed it necessary to test the resolve of the Bahari'mtoto and their leader, in the form of a neighbour who they scarcely knew existed...

xxxOff Shore allies...

Relationships with the Bahari'mtoto and the Kizingo'zaa were growing slowly and steadily. Day by day they grew to trust one another much more and as such, peace returned to the pride. Routine and tradition returned, each member growing accustomed to their new leader as well as their new found sense of security. They had passed through not one, but two trials and for now, they had been rewarded. They wanted for nothing and for them, it was a time to be thankful.

Yet who would have thought that the gods were not yet finished with this small and unassuming pride? For no sooner had they settled into their new routine than strangers washed up upon their shores and brought tales of islands in their midst. Though not entirely capable of coherent conversation at the time, the leopard had been taken into their care and when recovered he had granted them the information they sought.

These islands lay across the water, only reachable in low tide and lay home to three prides - two of these prides appeared to be at war, while the third was an unassuming leopard colony. A war for resources had begun between these prides as a result of the Tsunami and it had culminated into the kidnapping of a princess, one that threatened to be brought to the shores if the issue was not addressed.

Thus, diplomats were sent to these regions and an agreement was born - all three 'prides' would follow under the Bahari'mtoto banner. These prides would adhere to Bahari tradition and address the leadership as such - in return, they would have access to the resources on the mainland and want for nothing. It was an easy choice for those desperate for food and clean water - and thus, the Bahari territory grew just a touch...

xxxA time of bounty...

How at least one of the pride's seers interpreted this is a blessing.

One day, a strange thing appeared upon the beach - One of the giant creatures of the sea, bigger than any lion had ever seen. It was no shark nor was it a dolphin! And there was so much meat! After some time of friendship with their brothers and sisters next door, the Bahari saw this as a prime opportunity and extended to the Kizingo'zaa an invitation to enjoy this gifted feast from the sea with them.

Many came from even outside the lands to not only enjoy the meal, but also pick apart the skeleton. The bones would be good for building, as well as decorating! One lioness, Athena, stood out to Ram, leading the proverbial charge of both the feast and the clean-up, going so far as to invite the baboons of the forest to join them and keep what they wished.

Of course, there was a saying, from someone somewhere, that blessings came part and parcel with tests... And a test was coming.

xxxA test of the pride...

They'd been there for some time, hanging around and not leaving. The buffalo were dangerous at the best of times, but the jungle was now in shambles where the herd had refused to leave. Nobody dared go in to ask what was going on, since the beasts were so testy, and they had been ordered to not for safety purposes.

The break came when three strangers showed up, deciding despite warnings to cut through the trees. The local Leopon, Mongolia, braved going in to stop or save them, but then he didn't come out.

The test had clearly been set - How would the pride handle the buffalo? Chaos broke out when some of the pride went in to help, only for more strangers to get sucked in. Surely this couldn't end well, could it?

[Ongoing!]
